Cerisedolls Sandre n°3/8 by Lillycat: Beyond the world of Barbie and G.I. Joe, there is the world of Lladro and Blythe. Beyond the world of Lladro and Blythe, there is a magical realm of custom made dolls, hand crafted with an eclectic collection of hair and fur, rigorous molding of resin and plaster. While looking at Blythe dolls some years ago, I came across Lillycat on Flickr. Since then, she had come a long way from illustration to custom Blythe dolls, to now creating her own dolls from scratch. While her sketches convey emotion with great strokes and composition, I always find her colored finalized illustrations way too calculated and rigid. However, such rigor somehow translates very well into doll making. In the custom series of 8 dolls named Sandre, she performed a Gesamtkunstwerk of a doll - everything from the intricate ball joints of the limbs, to the individual eyelashes, down to the customized box of the doll, up to the overall character design. And every small step is done with great craftsmanship. One unfortunate dilemma of such an exquisite doll is that it is not a doll, but more of a sculpture to look at and to marvel, rather than to play with or to be carried around. In fact, I do wonder what the collectors are going to do with the doll other than trapping it in a glass shelf. The only difference between this and traditional sculpture are its movable joints, in which the artist gives its collector the choice of the doll’s context and activities, which is largely decided by the strong design of the character. (And to be honest, the doll looks like me. That’s all that matters. :p )
